DPreview reviews the TX1
The folks over at Digital Photography Review have posted a full review of the Canon Powershot TX1, the most in-depth I have seen to date, and up to their usual high standard. Pitching it as a camcorder that does great stills, they were struggling to work out who the TX1 is really pitched at, but eventually gave it a 'Recommended' rating by the skin of its teeth.
What do they like?
- Good quality stills
- Compact design
- 10x zoom
- Good image stabilisation
- Minimal purple fringing
- 720p movies
- Super macro
- Vertical design and ergonomics
- Lens not very wide
- Noisy over 400 ISO
- Focus hunts a bit too much
- Huge movie files
- Soft looking HD movies
- No HDMI
- Movies noisy in low light
- Small LCD
- Weak flash
- Poor battery life

Most of the reviewers have put a lot of emphasis on the ergonomics, which just means they are used to horizontal still cams. I have large hands and no problem, having used the Sanyo for a year.
I actually prefer the button arrangement on the TX1, having pushed the wrong trigger on the Sanyo many times.
I also think that it is unrealistic to expect to be able to use an HD videocam with one hand. With two it works very well, though you do have to be careful not to block the mikes.
My only serious complaints are the lack of wide angle (which I may be able to fix somehow) and the lack of a mike input.
The camera is great for it's intended purpose.
Peter I have to agree. I always place my left forefinger and thumb at the top and bottom left of the LCD to steady it, and it works very well without blocking the mics.
I too would like it to have a (much) wider lens, probably the biggest niggle for me, but as I've said a few times, none of these issues are big enough for it to really be a problem, and this camera gets as close to doing everything I expect, as any camera has to date.
I'll third that! The ergonomics work well for me personally. The only annoyance I have is the Power Button. I wish they'd placed it on top in place of the Print button which I'll never use!
One of the issues I have in the "don't like" or "needed in this camera" is the ability to independantly change shutter speed and aperture. Currently one can change shutter speed by changing ISO settings and aperture by changing modes but they really need to get the changes independantly for more artistic images.

I returned mine because of purple smearing in bright light. Here is a sample I took of the TX-1's video in differing light conditions: TX-1 Samples

Can you lock the focus in manual mode?
Can you lock the exposure with a certain shutter speed aperture?
Yes, you can lock the Focus, Exposure, and Flash Exposure.
You'll be able to read the info about these features through the advanced manual (p48 ~ p50).

My comment on professional reviews is that I always read and heed but find that user reviews are much more valuable to me. The pros actually intimidated me from buying the TX1 shortly after it was released. In fact I just got it last week.
Personally, I think this is an OUTSTANDING camera.
Ergonomics? Well, it's not perfect but I can operate it just fine with one hand, maybe a little steadier with two. One hand with gloves on will be a challenge, though.
