Get your podcasts in HD

Well now that we've all got TX1's that can shoot in HD, is anyone out there planning on producing a video podcast or video for the web? There is now quite a bit of HD podcast content being produced and made available for download. Most of these are served through the iTunes store, all of them for free, but not necessarily easy to find.

So, one of my other projects has been to come up with a definitive list of all the Hi-Def and Apple TV compatible podcasts that you can download and watch on your high-res PC monitor, or better still, on your HDTV via a media centre or Apple TV.

To date there's over 40, with around half of these being true HD (720p or better). They range from tech related news to food and cooking, travel, comedy, health and lifestyle, news, science and music.

I've watched them all, and the good news is that with the move to HD, most podcast producers are also lifting the overall quality of the production and content. Many are using good mics and even green screen to really make these shows look professional.

My top 3 picks from the list of 40 are...

  • Mac Media Cast - A Mac centric news and technology show, produced by a very talented guy Joseph Nilo from the U.S. who makes the whole thing in his basement, using green screen to very good effect
  • Rome HD - Only has one episode at the moment, but that ep includes a crystal clear HD tour of the city of Rome
  • Divefilm - Regular episodes all shot underwater in breathtaking HD - swimming with sharks, whales and all sorts of underwater creatures
Check out the full listing at the Apple TV and HD video podcasts blog. If you like the list and find it useful, feel free to Digg it using the button on the story.

Just wanted to say thanks for all of the useful information you've posted in this blog - your efforts are appreciated.

Also, not sure if anyone has looked into it, but does the TX1 show up in iChat when plugged in via USB? You can't really ask for more than what it does, but that would be icing in the cake, so to speak.

Hi,

Here is a link to a short 720p video I shot in the local duck pond.

Cool! I was just shopping for a new digicam, it's nice to discover satisfied users of tx-1 (although I am not quite sure about how handy is it, with that grip).

I am wondering will the HD videos work on people's iPods. I shoot a podcast but I do not shoot in HD because I was worried that the file sizes would be too big for people to stream, download, or be able to receive them on their iPods. Anyone have any thoughts.

Lawrence, you'll need to re-encode your videos to a format compatible with the iPod. I still recommend shooting them in widescreen HD 720p because then you're shooting in the highest possible quality which when encoded for iPods should still look really good. It will also be a good format for encoding for Apple TV.

I posted a hi-def video (of the new Airbus A380 landing in Chiang Mai, Thailand) shot with my TX-1.

hey Matt,
I hear disparaging remarks about the tx1 at various video snobbery sites. I was tempted to get an avchd camcorder now that final cut express has that capability. they make it look easy to use with one of those new panasonic cams. I think the quality of the video you shot looks great to me. the compact size of the camera has to be handy. do you still love it?
how about some macro bug videos. got any?

Hiya. I think the snobbery comes from the fact that it's not a 'proper' HD camera in as much as it doesn't have the full set of manual controls that most enthusiasts like, and doesn't have 'line in' for sound etc. They probably moan about the video codec too!

I still love mine, and take it most places with me on the off chance I want to take video. It's so small. I play the movies back on a 42" 1080p TV and it looks pretty damn good (if shot in good light of course).

Don't have any bug videos unfortunately, only stills.

i'm convinced and I'm gettin' one.
