I just used the scene modes for most of it, no real manual settings going on. No tripod at all, all hand held. Bright streaks are definitely annoying but manageable.

Nah no plans to show Canon. Much better stuff around than this, esp all the HDSLR clips now, which kick butt. I have moved to the Canon 7D for video now.

Hey Josh, great video. The picture looks really clear in a lot of those shots, and the titles and effects are great. Even the sometimes erratic focus on the TX1 held pretty firm. I can see what you mean about the shaking, but that's to be expected on such a small handheld camera without a tripod/dolly. Sometimes I think the electronic stabilisation makes it worse. Awesome job!

yo matt, thanks for the tips, I made another video with new footage, it looks better than last time. I edited first in Adobe After Effects and did no compression on my output files, compiled them all in Adobe Premier and then exported it as an H.262.Mov files. What do you think?

Hi Josh,

Ideally you would leave the raw video in the MJPEG format for editing because it's it's usually better to edit in the highest quality format you can, and then transcode to something else when editing is complete.

In your case, if your machine is having trouble playing back MJPEG, then yes you could transcode first, and then edit, but that's not ideal because you will be degrading the quality of the source material twice - once for editing and potentially another time for the final output.

I wonder how new your machine is? I would have thought that anything within a couple of years old would be able to play it back.

Some editing programs allow you to create an 'offline' copy of your source files that are in a lower grade format which allows for easy and smooth editing. When it comes time to output the final product, the editing software applies all of your offline edits to the raw files behind the scenes. This way you still have a high quality end product for playback or distribution elsewhere.

One thing to check would be that you have the most up to date codecs for Windows. Perhaps you have an older MJPEG codec which is struggling with the TX1 movies. I'm on a Mac, so I can't really get more specific on that one.

If you do end up transcoding before editing, I recommend going to MPEG4, and setting the quality settings pretty high so you don't lose too much detail to begin with. Try a few different settings using a short clip of a few seconds so that you're not waiting an age each time to see the results.

Hey Matt, thanks for the link. So would you say that it is best to first convert your videos to another file type, like DIVX before editing, so that you don't have to use an MJpeg compressor (like Morgan M-jpeg or Pegasus) while editing your videos?

Hi Josh, this post is a good a place as any to start looking at alternative codecs. Transcoding can be a bit of a black art, but with some decent software like Handbrake for the Mac, you can really get some good results.

That was a really good video. Sadly I am having trouble getting my video to look that good, and I think it has to do with M-Jpeg not playing very good on a PC. I am forced to use a Codec to compress the video and I think it is effecting the quality. It would be great to get some more imput on how to edit and compress video on both a Mac and PC.

Great montage. I have ~7.5 gb worth of wedding footage waiting to be edited from my tx1 as soon as I can pull myself away from work for an afternoon. After seeing this, I'm actually looking forward to the result.

There are two things in particular that I want to film with it. The first is skiing which I guess shouldn't be too tricky (except for operating the buttons below zero degrees!) and the second is for dance competitions.

Dance competitions are always indoors, at night and with entirely artificial light. My old Sony DSCP 100 did a fine job exposure wise but lacked resolution and had a locked zoom. I was hoping to get better results with a TX1 but can't think of any ways to minimise noise, any suggestions?
I shot some footage at a gig last weekend (at only 320x240 due to pressing the wrong buttons!) and it looked pretty good noise wise on my projector (mainly due to cropping to 0 of black values below 16 I think), not much different to a SD tv show torrent. However on my monitor the noise was really bad.

I would have thought that with a little tweaking of contrast and brightness in the camera bios the affects coud be less pronounced. Fingers crossed that Canon make some tweaks...

My girlfriend just bought a Panasonic TZ3 so it'll be interesting to see how that compares in different conditions, althuogh the resolution is slightly lower and the zoom is locked.

Hi Martin,

I used the Manual setting (on the circular mode selector) and kept it pretty simple - Auto ISO and let the camera do the work. I did use the colour accent mode for singling out the yellow cabs.

I shot about 3GB of footage which is about 9 minutes worth, editing down to 4.5. Normally I'd shoot 3-4 times that much on DV (because I can) but this way I shoot more sparingly and (try to) get fewer but better shots. Saves hours editing I can tell you.

The purple haze is a but annoying, but I can live with it. I have seen some fireworks footage and yes it doesn't look to good.

Hi Matt, that's a fantastic montage. I've just bought one and have lots of questions.

Did you use any manual settings for filming or did you just use the scene modes? Did you use a tripod (or wall) for some shots? How many GB of footage did you shoot? The bright light streaks don't appear too frequently which is something that I was concerned about. I imagine fireworks wouldn't look good?

Have you thought about sending a link of the NY clip to Canon? I'm sure they'd be interested to see what you've achieved with it. You never know, they mighteven give you a freebie!

When I read about the colour accent function the first thing that I thought of was a New York cab and it worked very well. I remember the first time that I saw that affect used, in a couple of old George Michael videos ("Faith" and "Father Figure", both of which are on YouTube).

Have you managed to get any decent indoor evening video? Everything I've done so far has lots of noise.

This blog is an excellent source of info, thanks for all your hard work.
